Bob Dylan with Robbie Robertson and Rick Danko at the Isle of Wight Festival, August 31, 1969

A prime example of Dylan’s late sixties perversity, or at least cussedness: here he’s LIVING in Woodstock, New York, yet when festival season rolls around, he chooses to fly over and do a show on an island in the middle of the English Channel, rather than grace the stage of a HUGE festival taking place in his new hometown … .

Nobody attending Woodstock could really believe it, and rumors of an appearance by Dylan percolated through the crowd all weekend despite the fact that no organizer, emcee, etc. ever mentioned the guy’s name.
